Guide to Utility Services in Portland Oregon

One of the most commonly overlooked but frustrating chores when moving to a new city is taking care of your utilities. Figuring out the specifics often means scouring through multiple sources, but you don’t want to move into your new home to discover that a critical utility isn’t working yet. This guide from our Portland moving companies can help you get everything set up in your new home in Portland without having to rely on outside research.

Water – Portland Water Bureau

All water and sewage services in Portland are handled through the Portland Water Bureau, so you don’t need to worry about comparing pricing or searching for the right provider for your neighborhood. The Water Bureau is city-owned and rate-financed to ensure everyone receives equitable pricing, and you’ll receive a packet explaining all the rates and services when you sign up for service. You’ll need to call the Bureau at (503) 823-7770 to open an account, but once you’re registered, you can handle all your billing issues online.

Electric – Portland Electric Company

While Portland Electric Company is a privately-owned business, it’s the only game in town if you’re looking to get electrical service hooked up at your new place. Fortunately, their online portal makes it easy to set up your service. Everything can be handled online, and you can get your service turned on the same day in many cases. Once your account is set up, all of your billing and payment information can be handled directly through your account. The whole system is automated, but you will be required to provide a social security number, or state or federal ID. Depending on your location, you can also compare service with Pacific Power.

Gas – Northwest Natural

Whether or not you need gas at your home depends on the nature of your appliances. You’ll want to check with your landlord or the previous owner of your house before deciding whether or not you need natural gas service. Northwest Natural is the largest provider of natural gas services in Portland, and starting service through them is simple and streamlined. Starting service can be handled in a couple of days, although you are required to create an online account to go through the process. If you’d rather speak to a representative directly, you can call (800) 422-4012 Monday through Friday.

Internet and Cable

Unlike basic utilities, there are a number of different providers who offer phone, cable, and internet services. Comcast Cable, DISH Network, and Verizon are the three main national providers, and they each offer coverage for the majority of the Portland area. If you’d rather go through a local provider, you may want to consider CenturyLink. Packages and pricing can vary wildly, so you may want to use a price comparison tool to evaluate the options available to you.

Trash

Trash and recycling collection services vary according to your district, so you’ll want to speak with your hauler directly to learn about rates and collection schedules. Metro Recycling and Garbage can provide you with the contact information you need. All you have to do is enter your home’s address.
